Celebrating Women and Girls in Science

Every year on February 11, the world celebrates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a United Nations initiative aimed at promoting full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. In 2025, this day marks its 10th anniversary under the theme: “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science.”

The Importance of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Despite significant progress, women remain underrepresented in many scientific fields. According to UNESCO, only one-third of the world’s researchers are women, and they make up just 35% of students enrolled in STEM-related fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). This day serves to raise awareness of these disparities and to encourage actions that promote gender equality in science.

Celebrations in 2025

To mark the 10th anniversary, UNESCO will host a hybrid event on February 11, 2025, at its headquarters in Paris, France. The event will bring together Member States, both early-career and established scientists, stakeholders from the public and private sectors, UNESCO’s scientific networks, journalists, and students. Discussions will focus on the critical role of women in scientific innovation and the importance of inclusive media representation to combat gender stereotypes in STEM careers.

Local Initiatives in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region

In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA) region, various initiatives are being launched to celebrate this day and encourage the participation of women and girls in science. Universities and research centers are organizing workshops, conferences, and meet-and-greet events with local women scientists to inspire young girls to pursue careers in science. For example, Aix-Marseille University is planning a series of conferences that spotlight the contributions of women in scientific and technological fields.

How to Participate?

Everyone can take part in this celebration by attending local events, sharing information on social media using the hashtag #HerVoiceInScience, or organizing educational activities in schools and local communities. By supporting and encouraging women and girls in science, we help build a more inclusive and innovative future.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of women scientists, raise awareness of ongoing challenges, and promote concrete actions to achieve gender equality in science. By celebrating this day, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where women and girls have equal access to and participation in science, technology, and innovation.
