Eco Imagination participates in the Horizon Europe SEANERGY project: Towards zero-emission ports by 2050

We are delighted to announce Eco Imagination’s participation in the ambitious SEANERGY project, funded by the Horizon Europe program under grant number 101075710, contributing to the transformation of European ports into clean energy hubs by 2050.

With nearly €2.5 million in funding, this project brings together 12 European organizations, combining their expertise to develop the SEANERGY Master Plan, a strategic roadmap aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of portsand promoting sustainable energy solutions across Europe.

The Challenge of European Ports

Ports play a key role in the European economy, handling 74% of imported and exported goods. However, these infrastructures are also responsible for 13% of greenhouse gas emissions from transport within the European Union, as well as various environmental impacts, such as soil and water pollution.

To meet the EU’s ambitious emission reduction targets (55% by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050), ports must transform into clean energy hubs, integrating renewable energy sources, low-carbon fuels, and circular solutions for resource management.

This is where the SEANERGY project comes in—a pioneering initiative aligned with the priorities of the European Green Deal and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy.

Objectives of the SEANERGY Project

The project aims to develop the SEANERGY Master Plan, a reference document guiding port stakeholders in their energy and environmental transition. This plan will address the following aspects:

  • Analysis of the current situation of European ports and key stakeholders.

  • Identification of gaps in the energy and environmental transition of ports.

  • Development and implementation of the SEANERGY Master Plan, integrating synergies between technologies, regional cooperation, and viable business models.

  • Training and awareness initiatives to prepare professionals for the technological and organizational challenges of the transition.

Additionally, the project will develop the SEANERGY Handbook, a practical guide with video modules to help users adapt recommendations to their regional context.

A Strong European Partnership

Coordinated by Magellan Circle, SEANERGY brings together key players from across Europe, including:

Anleg, Atperson, Dafni, Ennshafen, Fundacion Valencia Port, Future Proof Shipping, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, Rina Consulting, World Maritime University, Zero Emissions Engineering, and Eco Imagination.

As a project partner, Eco Imagination will contribute its expertise in sustainable communication to raise awareness and mobilize port stakeholders around this crucial transition.
